SNOWDONIA (2 hours SW of Liverpool or Manchester) has some of the most breathtaking mountain landscape in Britain, and is one of the oldest National Parks in the world. This ancient land of mountains and pasture sits amongst lakes, rivers, moorland and woodland. Close to the sea it is a land of changing weather and dramatic light.
TAN Y BWLCH - the beautiful area of Tan y Bwlch lies in the softer more wooded part of the Snowdonia National Park. Hafod sits high above the valley with slopes of oak woodland dotted with magestic redwoods and firs. The area is known for its rare lichens and moss as well as its wildlife and birds. A rich variety of woodland birds can be heard and seen, as well as buzzards and ravens circling above.
The Making an Artist's Book courses will use the surrounding landscape as a starting point, in particular one's personal experience of being in the landscape.
Noelle will demonstrate how to make a variety of different types of book, with each student making their own one-off book using drawing, painting and either hand written or digitally printed text. See itinerary below.

VENUE ~ Hafod cottage is a large stone cottage in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park. It is nestled in 30 acres of privately owned woodland situtated a mile from the road. A secluded and stunning venue it is surrounded by mountain woodland and lakes, with wonderful views of the nearby mountain ranges. The house has been tastefully renovated in a simple and traditional style with a wood burning stove which keeps the cottage warm and cosy. A perfect place to walk and find inspiration amongst nature.
ACCOMMODATION: Three bedrooms (shared bathroom with WC, basin and shower), suitable for single or shared occupancy.
YOUR COURSE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING: 4 nights stay at Hafod cottage, Snowdonia, with all meals. The following daily programme of 3 days tuition making an artist's book.
ITINERARY:
DAY 1 : ARRIVAL AT HAFOD : Time to get to know your surroundings, meet the other guests and relax after your journey. We will also spend some time in the studio looking at types of artist's books before dinner. 19.30 - Dinner.
DAY 2 : DRAWING AND PAINTING : Breakfast. 10.00-13.00 - exploring the local landscape and making a start on gathering information and ideas for your artist's book with Noelle. Lunch is usually soup or bread and cheese with juice. Time to relax, a walk or continue working in the landscape or studio. 16.30-17.30 - time to review the day's work, give direction and tuition with Noelle. 19.30 - Dinner.
DAY 3 : MAKING AN ARTIST'S BOOK : Breakfast. 10.00-13.00 - developing your gathered information and ideas and making a start on your artist's book with Noelle. Lunch. Time to relax, a walk or continue working in the studio. 16.30-17.30 - tuition with Noelle. 19.30 - Dinner.
DAY 4 : MAKING AN ARTIST'S BOOK : Breakfast. 10.00-13.00 - continuing to work or your artist's book with Noelle. Lunch. Time to relax, a walk or continue working in the studio. 16.30-17.30 - review of books with tips and advice about developing work after the course with Noelle. 19.30 - Dinner.
DAY 5: FAREWELL AND DEPARTURE after breakfast.
All meals are served in Hafod cottage. All dinners are served with wine.

10.00-13.00 - tuition with Noelle. Lunch is usually soup or bread and cheese with juice. Continue working in the studio or in the landscape. 15.30-16.30 - time to review the day's work, give direction and tuition with Noelle. DEPART.
PAINTING AND DRAWING for beginners : Noelle will teach and demonstrate a variety of ways to look, sketch and gather visual information with an emphasis on aquiring observational skills.
PAINTING AND DRAWING for intermediate to more experienced students : Noelle will teach how to improve existing skills and help develop the strengths and direction of your painting. Creative exercises will help to open up new ways of approaching your subject. You will be asked to bring 3 pieces of work so we can discuss your work and how you might like to develop.
SINGLE DAY ~ MAKING AN ARTIST'S BOOK ~ TUTORIAL - ITINERARY:
10.00-13.00 - Noelle will show you a variety of different book formats giving technical information about how to construct each type. We will discuss ideas you bring for making a book and make a start. Lunch is usually soup or bread and cheese with juice. Continue working in the studio making, possibly completing, a simple artist's book. 15.30-16.30 - time to review the day's work, give direction and tuition with Noelle. DEPART.
